To a large extent because of scare-mongers like Schiff. Gold and silver in particular are 'anxiety investments'. But, nervous that such? investors are, they could bail on it at any time. It doesn't look like they will in the near future (but then, one never knows) but they will eventually and the crash will be spectacular. Just like in 1980.
